Pathos
Throughout the novel, "Black Boy," Wright shares many emotional hardships that he faces throughout his time growing up. Not only does he face emotional times just by living in the South, he also faces many hard times just living in his household with his family. Since Wright was considered as a ‘trouble kid’ growing up his family was very hard on him. Wright was not into the religion of Christianity as much as his family was. In fact, he really did not believe in God at all, so because of this sometimes he would get punished for not believing in God mainly from his grandmother because she was a very religious person. Wright and his Aunt Addie did not have the best relationship. Wright attended a religious school where his Aunt Addie was the only teacher there. She was very hard on Wright and would accuse and punish him for things he did not do. An emotional part in this novel is when Aunt Addie whips Wright in front of the whole class. Wright had many emotional times growing up, but the two biggest emotional times are when his mother gets very sick and becomes paralyzed, and when his grandpa becomes sick and dies. Losing someone close to you especially a family member can be very tough, and seeing someone suffer in a negative way can be very tough too. Wright became very emotional once he found out how sick his mother was. Reading the many hard times that Wright went through and visualized as a young boy you can only feel sad, mad or even sorry that he had to go through those things. You also can have many emotions because Wright live through so much racism in his life, especially living in the South and working for white people.
