Casual Relationship
Casual relationship is used all throughout the novel Black Boy. Wright uses casual relationship to assert that how growing up in the South in poverty and during segregation can affect on whom you become as an adult. Since Wright grew up in the South if affected him by growing up in amid poverty, dealing with hunger, fear, and hatred. He developed many negative characteristics like lying, stealing, being brutal and cold. Also, he became a "drunkard" at the age of six because of the influences that were around him as a child. Growing up during the time of segregation meant that everything was separated for whites and blacks, so that meant whites got better education than blacks because their education was not as good as whites. Not getting the best education impacted Wright a lot, mostly by determining what his career would be. Also, not having a big support system could have affected Wright on growing up to becoming an adult. Throughout the novel Wright always loved to read and write, but his family despised what he loved to do, they even would punish Wright for reading books not containing to the Bible. Even many of Wright’s bosses at his jobs and his friends laughed at the fact the Wright wanted to become a writer when he grew. Since people doubted him this affected Wright to continue to read, write, and even publish many stories that he wrote in the newspaper. I can’t imagine how hard it was to grow up in the South during segregation as a ‘Black Boy.’
